Diffinery vs Bitbucket and Bitbucket Pipelines

How Diffinery compares with Bitbucket Cloud and Bitbucket Pipelines on CI format, build minutes, runner sizes, prices, Jira, AI agents and self-managed options.

Bitbucket is Atlassian's Git hosting, with Bitbucket Pipelines for CI/CD built in and close ties to Jira. It comes as Bitbucket Cloud and as Bitbucket Data Center, Atlassian's self-managed edition. Diffinery is a git forge with GitHub Actions–compatible CI built in, designed for teams of people and AI agents. It is free, open-source software (Apache-2.0) that you deploy to your own Cloudflare account, with no hosted service (see Deploy your own Diffinery and the source code). Bitbucket facts here are from Atlassian's own website and documentation, checked on October 25, 2026, and linked below.

In short

  • The biggest difference is the CI format. Bitbucket Pipelines uses bitbucket-pipelines.yml. Diffinery runs GitHub Actions workflows (.github/workflows/*.yml) as they are, so it suits teams coming from GitHub, or teams that want the GitHub Actions ecosystem of reusable actions.
  • Choose Bitbucket if your team plans its work in Jira and uses other Atlassian products, needs hosted Arm builds or build steps larger than 4 vCPUs, needs to run the forge on its own servers, or wants a service that Atlassian runs for you.
  • Choose Diffinery if you want GitHub Actions compatibility, 4-vCPU runners by default, a forge built around AI agents with server-enforced guardrails, and push protection on every repository, and you're happy to run your own instance on Cloudflare.

Where each one is the better fit

Bitbucket is the better fit when your company runs on Jira and Confluence and wants code linked to Jira work items, when you need hosted Arm builds or build steps with more than 4 vCPUs, when you need a self-managed edition in your own data center, or when you'd rather not run any infrastructure yourself.

Diffinery is the better fit when you want to write CI in the GitHub Actions format and use actions from GitHub as they are, when faster default runners matter for your Linux builds, and when AI agents write a growing share of your code and you want the forge to enforce what they can and can't do. You run Diffinery yourself, on your own Cloudflare account.

Moving from Bitbucket

Deploy your own instance first (guide). Diffinery's importer reads from GitHub. From Bitbucket, push your branches and tags with plain Git (see Move with plain Git), then rewrite bitbucket-pipelines.yml as workflows in .github/workflows/ and check them with diffinery workflow validate. Issues and pull requests don't come across this way. Steps that need Windows or macOS keep running on your own machines through self-hosted runners.

Frequently asked questions

Is Diffinery a Bitbucket alternative?

Yes. Like Bitbucket Cloud, Diffinery hosts Git repositories with pull requests, reviews, branch protection and built-in CI. It doesn't have Bitbucket's Jira integration, hosted Arm builds, build steps larger than 4 vCPUs or a version for your own servers, and Bitbucket Cloud is a service Atlassian runs for you, where Diffinery is software you run on your own Cloudflare account.

Does Diffinery run bitbucket-pipelines.yml?

No. Diffinery runs GitHub Actions workflows. Teams moving from Bitbucket Pipelines rewrite their pipelines as workflows in .github/workflows/, usually replacing each Pipe with a GitHub action that does the same job.

Is Diffinery cheaper than Bitbucket?

Diffinery itself is free and open source, with no per-user price; you pay Cloudflare for what your instance uses, which depends on your usage, so we don't quote a figure to compare. Bitbucket Cloud lists $3.65 per user per month on Standard with 2,500 build minutes, $8 on Premium with 3,500, and $10 for each extra 1,000 minutes. A build minute on Bitbucket is counted at the step's size, so a minute on a 2x step uses two.

Can I use Jira with Diffinery?

Diffinery has no built-in Jira integration. It sends GitHub-compatible webhooks and has a GitHub-style REST API, so you can connect your own automation to pushes, pull requests and CI results.

Is Bitbucket Data Center being discontinued?

Not according to Atlassian. Its Data Center end-of-life page says that, unlike its other Data Center products, Bitbucket and Bamboo Data Center "will not end of life", and that existing customers can renew to a Bitbucket Hybrid License that covers Data Center and Bitbucket Cloud (source).
